4 ways to monetize your publications with Issuu AdPages

In case you didn’t catch it, we launched something big yesterday called Issuu AdPages, which tech writers and startup blogs are already talking about.

AdPages is a simple do-it-yourself practice for turning print documents or your existing Issuu publications into online ads. AdPages is for everyone, and it’s not just about getting readers. You can easily monetize your publication on Issuu. Here’s four basic ways to add value to your existing print

1. Catalog Publishers

Let’s say you’ve got a catalog of products, a lookbook of your winter line, or a sale flyer. Well, chances are that within Issuu’s 4 million publications, some of them are reviewing or displaying your product. Advertise your catalog and place it alongside the publications whose readers love your products. Use our new easy link buttons to get more readers clicking through to your web shop.

2. Print-subscription magazines

Publishers are already using Issuu to upload eye-before-you-buy teasers and previews of their upcoming issue. Use AdPages to upload an early trailer of what’s in your next print edition, and direct readers to your subscription sign-up page on your own site.

3. Freelancers

Tons and tons of people upload their beautiful portfolios and work samples to Issuu. Why not get noticed a little more? Put your portfolio on AdPages and advertise it alongside publications you’ve contributed to. Who knows where your next job may come from!

4. Event and Festival planners

It’s the norm today to create beautiful guides for your festival, conference, fashion week, or industry event. Start an AdPages campaign to circulate your brochure and target it to local readers. Or reach out to interest niches and use AdPages to up your signups and ticket sales.

We’re looking forward to sharing more case studies and success stories from AdPages. Keep checking back for more inspiration!

The AdPages Story: meet the best tool for capturing more readers

It’s a big day around the Issuu offices, as we launch a tool that upgrades your distribution power as digital publishers.

You see, something occured to us recently: you sure can publish on Issuu, but you sure can’t distribute. In the real world, you rely on circulating your publications on a newsstand or magazine rack. You can literally place your content in front of someone. But that’s the real challenge with digital publishing: letting people know the material is there.

Each month, you as users upload over 300,000 publications to our platform. Our library is incredibly deep, and what’s worth reading is not always apparent on the surface. It’s not like you can stroll by a magazine stand and see what’s on display.

So if you can’t promote your publications on a virtual magazine stand, how do we really complete the transfer from real-world to digital publishing? This question sent our offices humming, and we’ve been working around the clock for months to improve the way your distribute your print.

What we deliver today a tool for repurposing your existing publications as online ads. It’s an economical, do-it-yourself advertising tool that places your document in front of new readers. We call it Issuu AdPages.

AdPages is for everyone. We’ve optimized AdPages to be accessible to all, which means we’ve left pricing up to each individual publisher. We ask you: how much is a reader worth to you? You tell us if you’ll pay 5 cents or 5 dollars per read. And just to stress: we don’t charge for placements, only reads.

Most of all, AdPages is about abolishing crappy online ads and replacing it with a valuable experience for the reader. We’re the first platform to make an ad a deep reading experince.

If you have an Issuu account and a publicly viewable document, you’re halfway there. Get started with AdPages now.

Stay tuned this week for case studies and great examples of ways to optimize your print investment with AdPages.

New ways to share! Try out our Reader in Standalone mode.

Standalone mode - Go full-browser with a simple link in a single click!

We are pleased to introduce a new way to share your favourite publications. We call it standalone mode! Simply lift new shortened embed links and use them as you would with any normal link. Your publication will open in a beautiful full-browser Reader, instead of directing you to the publication’s page on Issuu’s site.

Many of you use our embed options to share publications across the interweb. What we introduce today in no way replaces that. We’ve just created another slick, easy way to show off documents in full-screen.

You can grab the standalone embed link for any document, but you’ll only be able to customize the embed layout for your own publications.

Try using the standalone mode in newsletters to link to event guides. How about inserting them into emails and lead readers to your latest catalogs? Why not add them as hyperlinks in your existing Issuu publications to reference back issues? Or just use them on Twitter!

To get the code, use the new Embed menu (found in the same spot as the old menu). Grab the short ‘Link‘ right under the lengthier ‘Get the embed code’, and pop it in wherever you need it. Simple!

New interaction possibilities, fill your mags with action!

Today we’re excited to reveal a simple, slick new way to increase interaction within your magazine, catalogs, and portfolios. From now on, you’ll be able to flesh out your documents with easy navigation link buttons.

What does that it mean? Well, it means alot more action from a standard digital edition. Use these nifty little buttons to get them into your online shop, print, download and buy your publications, or link easily to your blog, site, or support services.

In the past we’ve blogged about keeping your links active when you upload your .pdf, or how to modify your hyperlinks. Let’s just say, it’s a whole lot easier now because you can insert these links after you’ve uploaded your document. (Note, all your active links will still work). Actually, here’s our top ten favourite new black-and-white link buttons:

  • Publication button - Redirect readers to a prior issues, a library of back issues or your subscription site.
  • Heart button- What’s not to love? Garner support and adoration for products, issues, news, photos within your document.
  • Map button- Great for conference brochures and festival guides! Give readers maps and directions to your events, or just show them where you’re offices are.
  • Phone button- Link them right to your Skype account or direct phone line.
  • Support button- Lead readers to your FAQ, Help Desk, Customer Care, or other support services.
  • Cart button- Everyone’s favourite: buy! buy! buy! Link to you online store, etsy, subscription sign-up, or directly to the manufacturer’s site.
  • Print buttonSimple one-click option to print
  • Navigate button- Way easier than our earlier hyperlinking tutorial, create easy table of contents and page jumps to articles.
  • Info button - Direct readers to your About page, Opening Hours, and well, all the info they’ll need.
  • Profile button - Share your Issuu profile with your readers and direct them to your other publications.

Here’s a quick run-through to peppering your document with some of these. Alright, first: when viewing a document, you’ll be prompted to edit in links by the top right ‘Edit’ button above your publication. If you’re in full-screen Reader mode, a blue drop-down bar will encourage the same.

Second: drag your mouse to create a dotted box – this is where your new button will go. Then click ‘Edit.’

From there, a pop-up appears with all the different buttons. Play around in there! When you’ve selected your icon, enter the URL and Tooptip. Then click ‘Done’ when you’re satisfied. Make sure to save, and Preview your new button.

Get linking you guys!

Issuu Voices: How Electronic Beats is making magazines collectable again.

Issuu Voices is a recurring segment on our blog. Each segment is written by and for publishers to highlight top quality publications as well as industry best practices across the world. If you wish to participate, please let us know.

We invited Max Dax, editor of Electronic Beats Magazine, to pick up on a conversation from their latest issue. In an editorial opener, he popped the question:  How can print geneate a new trust in quality and reliability? In other words: How do you make magazines collectable again? We were sure curious to hear his answer.

How to Make Magazines Collectable Again

When it comes to publishing in these times of change, one of the central questions becomes: What kind of journalistic freedom does the paperless, digital, socially-networked online revolution offer? I mean: Who needs yesterday’s news on paper, when you can get the up-to-date information on your iPad or smartphone in a second? I don’t know how many million trees could be saved if we’d transfer the entirety of news onto smal sets of screens. Sure, you get a problem of information on-demand, once your device begins to pre-select your fields of interest, ie: it basically offers only what you want to read. But still, the idea of a paperless newsstand seems to be quite overwhelming popular.

With ambitious magazines, though, things are different. Here, I see a clear tendency towards unique, beautifully crafted, collectable – even high-priced – magazines. We are talking about magazines printed on sustainable, high quality paper, designed by great art directors, with texts and photos that are produced consciously with the perspective in mind that the printed matter will last. Magazines of this kind will resemble books more than the magazines we used to know – and like a book they will be judged by the amount of new ideas they offer and the inspiration they will transfer to the reader. Thanks to the fact that you can discuss everything on a day-to-day basis online, printed magazines can really become specific and even erratic, as the need to cover the latest news no longer exists.

For the magazine editor, this offers golden opportunities when it comes to content. When you don’t have to satisfy an on-demand culture, you can get visionary. Or, more aptly: You can adapt visionary ideas that have stood the test of time and confront them with interviews and texts that reflect the radical changes of the digital revolution in art, fashion, literature, film and music. Of course, the more specific and surprising you get, the more difficult it is to define your target audience, if there is any. But then again, in terms of distribution, Issuu is a perfect tool to present a worldwide readership something that, in the past, would have never had any chance at the newsstand.

So, we now have the paradox situation that the magazine culture somehow profits from the fact that the magazine as we knew it is a thing of the past. And that’s okay. We’re not speaking out against reading a magazine like Electronic Beats via Issuu.com on a tablet device.

Our contributor Hans Ulrich Obrist coined the term “reality production” for what can happen when two interesting people start talking to each other. In some ways you, as an online reader, become a witness of such reality production, when you read the facsimile of a magazine in an online version. At least if it’s one that defines itself as a test laboratory for the print world.

A Facelift for Profile pages

Today we’re revealing a beautiful makeover of publishers’ profiles on Issuu.
We got to thinking that a standard profile page could offer a little more. Especially for businesses. We’ve highlighted our favourite bits – the publication, the library, the brand – and stylized it until it was just the way our publishers need. Wondering who was Lucky Number One?
In a few short days, Copenhagen Fashion Festival will hit the streets in one of Europe’s most stylish cities. Like most fashion weeks, they’ve produced a beautiful guide filled with designer profiles, event tip-offs, runway schedules, and giveaways.

While we’re sure a limited amount of copies are stacked neatly around the city, waiting for you to nose it out, the fine folk at CPH Fashion Week want to put it in your hands immediately. The Guide is on their sleek new Issuu profile. If you’ll be in town, don’t miss the opportunity to dive in, plan your festival, and get inspired.

Their profile page on Issuu

For all the fashion bloggers with no other option but to await photos from the lucky attendees, or savor the occasional live-streamed catwalk, Copenhagen Fashion Week will be publishing DANSK Daily to their Issuu library before it hits the streets.

DANSK Daily is your must-have daily dose, with style news from top Danish designers – Wood Wood, Stine Goya, Henrik Vibskov, and up-and comers like Dennis Lyngsø. I mean, it’s content that you bloggers really won’t want to miss.

Since fashion has been going digital before we even knew what a fashion blogger was, it was just a matter of time before the best kept secrets of the industry – The Fashion Week – were out in the open.

We’re awfully excited about helping digital publishers take it up a notch. Keep your eyes peeled on the site for new stylized profiles.

Why Sharing Everything is working for Google’s Think Quarterly

¨Share everything,¨ says Susan Wojcicki.

By impulse alone, we’d probably agree. Issuu created this reading platform reaching millions of readers precisely because we believe in sharing it all.

But you’ve got to be asking: who is she to say?

Wojcicki is one of the voices in Google’s Think Quarterly: Innovation, the second edition of their refreshing compendium-like book. Yes, Google publishes a quarterly book. (Psst, we host ‘em.)

Read the Eight Pillars of Innovation on Issuu

She’s also one of  Googe’s original employees. As in, out of the 26,000 people currently employed by Google, she was #16. ¨By sharing everything,¨ she writes in her eight-point guide to innovation ¨you encourage the discussion, exchange and re-interpretation of ideas, which can lead to unexpected and innovative outcomes.¨

She’s right. The web is increasingly open, and the rapid pace of innovation has created some of the meanest, leanest platforms online, as evidenced between the pages of Think Quarterly. Just thinking about the way we share content should be example enough.

We’ve already extolled the brilliant way that Think Quarterly is shared. It’s free, built to be digital, and conscious of mobile readers. Plus it’s drop dead gorgeous, all thanks to the creatives at TCOLondon.

But we could let this out the door without mentioning one more aspect: their content is localized. Depending on what side of the pond you’re on, you’ll might flip through a U.K. or a U.S. version, both hot-off-the-digital-press.

Dive into both publications to get the most out of Think Quarterly.
