New interaction possibilities, fill your mags with action!

Today we’re excited to reveal a simple, slick new way to increase interaction within your magazine, catalogs, and portfolios. From now on, you’ll be able to flesh out your documents with easy navigation link buttons.

What does that it mean? Well, it means alot more action from a standard digital edition. Use these nifty little buttons to get them into your online shop, print, download and buy your publications, or link easily to your blog, site, or support services.

In the past we’ve blogged about keeping your links active when you upload your .pdf, or how to modify your hyperlinks. Let’s just say, it’s a whole lot easier now because you can insert these links after you’ve uploaded your document. (Note, all your active links will still work). Actually, here’s our top ten favourite new black-and-white link buttons:

  • Publication button - Redirect readers to a prior issues, a library of back issues or your subscription site.
  • Heart button- What’s not to love? Garner support and adoration for products, issues, news, photos within your document.
  • Map button- Great for conference brochures and festival guides! Give readers maps and directions to your events, or just show them where you’re offices are.
  • Phone button- Link them right to your Skype account or direct phone line.
  • Support button- Lead readers to your FAQ, Help Desk, Customer Care, or other support services.
  • Cart button- Everyone’s favourite: buy! buy! buy! Link to you online store, etsy, subscription sign-up, or directly to the manufacturer’s site.
  • Print buttonSimple one-click option to print
  • Navigate button- Way easier than our earlier hyperlinking tutorial, create easy table of contents and page jumps to articles.
  • Info button - Direct readers to your About page, Opening Hours, and well, all the info they’ll need.
  • Profile button - Share your Issuu profile with your readers and direct them to your other publications.

Here’s a quick run-through to peppering your document with some of these. Alright, first: when viewing a document, you’ll be prompted to edit in links by the top right ‘Edit’ button above your publication. If you’re in full-screen Reader mode, a blue drop-down bar will encourage the same.

Second: drag your mouse to create a dotted box – this is where your new button will go. Then click ‘Edit.’

From there, a pop-up appears with all the different buttons. Play around in there! When you’ve selected your icon, enter the URL and Tooptip. Then click ‘Done’ when you’re satisfied. Make sure to save, and Preview your new button.

Get linking you guys!

So, where is the button to automatically download a PDF of my publication? It seems like trying to find the PDF to download has been moving about the last few years. If there’s not a button, is there a simpler way for people to download it, a direct link perhaps?

Sound good but… aren’t you a little bit slow with making Issuu a lot more interactive. Animation enable features or video in the magazines???

iPad is making today the difference and mag publishers (like me or everybody here) is asking for immersive features.

Maybe enable .swf files… to combine them to the Issuu community, library and stats features (its just an idea).

This is a great step forward for Issuu, anything that can be edited after upload is always going to be handy. Are there any plans to start breaking up documents as single pages so you can perhaps upload easier than re-uploading a whole document?

This looks great – an easy, attractive way to freshen up a site. Sorry if this was already covered in a previous post, but do you know where we can get the buttons?

This is great! You mention your top 10 faves. I’m curious. Where do we find a full list of available buttons? I’m most interested to know if the list includes the ability to share via social media?

I have just tested the new buttons in one of my publications and they are surprisingly very quick and easy to use. I honestly thought they would be a whole lot more work involved in making them work. All in all- a very nice development.I especially like how the buttons gently ‘pulse’ which does a lot to draw some attention to them.

Hey! You can get them by logging in, opening any of your documents, and clicking the blue ‘Edit’ buttons that appears in the corner above them. Hope that helps!

Hi Gina, when you log in and open one of your documents, you’ll see the blue ‘Edit’ button. Dragging an area where you want a button will open the list of available choices. There aren’t specific ones for social media yet.

How can I make a button to print just one page? Our students just want one page of the document – not 200!

It is currently not possible to do this. I suggest that you download the publication and print the pages you need.

I cannot get the button to appear on the page. Why is that? The info box comes up, I follow the steps and hit enter and … nothing.

Strange. Are you saving once you’ve added the buttons? If you need more help, please write to business@issuu.com with screenshots of your problem. All the best, Issuu

I would like to use some kind of pop-ups.
    - Is there a tool for it?
    - Can I personalize an existing icon to a transparent one with a tooltip longer for a larger explanation (in a map, for instance)?
    - Can I delete the shadow in the binding of the magazine?

I used the print button which was very easy to add, but I don’t see what good it does…people still have to join issuu or log in to download/print the document. Why is that necessary…that is very frustrating.

Where do we find the icon buttons in English? Also, is there more info to add this to our pages? Sounds like a great tool if only I could figure out how! I have been playing with it for awhile with no success.
    Thanks!!!!

Hi Deidre, there’s no Issuu-made video tutorial. Perhaps one of our talented publishers has made one?

Can we have a link type without an outline? Frustrating having to have the blue link outline all the time – surely with this system it should be easy to give the option of just a non-outlined hyperlink?
    Thanks
